Garage Door Spring Maintenance Tips | Extend Spring Life

Your garage door springs work harder than any other component in the system. They support 150 to 400+ pounds of door weight every time you open and close your garage. That's thousands of cycles per year, year after year, through St. Louis summers that push past 90 degrees and winters that drop well below freezing.

Most homeowners across St. Louis, St. Charles, and Jefferson County never think about their springs until they break. And when they break, it's loud, sudden, and expensive. The good news is that a little regular maintenance goes a long way toward extending spring life and catching problems before they turn into emergencies.

This guide covers what you can safely do yourself, what to watch for, and when to call a professional.

How Garage Door Springs Work

Before we talk about maintenance, it helps to understand what springs actually do and why they matter so much.

Your garage door has one of two spring types. Torsion springs mount on a metal shaft above the door opening. They twist to store energy and release it to lift the door. Most modern residential doors in the St. Louis metro use torsion springs. Extension springs mount along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door. They stretch and contract to provide lifting force. These are more common in older homes.

Both types serve the same purpose: they counterbalance the door's weight so your opener isn't doing all the heavy lifting. Without functioning springs, your opener would burn out trying to move a door that weighs hundreds of pounds.

Springs don't last forever. Standard springs are rated for approximately 10,000 cycles, which works out to roughly 3 to 5 years for most families (assuming 4 cycles per day). High-cycle springs are rated for 25,000+ cycles and can last 7 to 10 years with proper care. And then there's the FOREVER Spring™, our lifetime-warrantied spring system designed to be the last spring you ever need. More on that later.

What You CAN Do Yourself (Safe DIY Maintenance)

Important Safety Notice

Garage door springs are under extreme tension. The maintenance tips below are for observation and basic care only. Never attempt to adjust, remove, or replace springs yourself. Spring work requires specialized tools and professional training. If you see a problem during any of these checks, call a professional.

1. Visual Inspection (Monthly)

This takes less than two minutes and can save you from a sudden failure. Stand inside your garage with the door closed and look up at the springs above the door (torsion) or along the tracks (extension).

Visual Inspection Checklist

Look for rust, corrosion, or discoloration on the spring coils
Check for gaps in the coils (indicates a spring has already broken)
Look for stretched, deformed, or unevenly spaced coils
If you have two torsion springs, compare side by side — they should look identical

Any visible damage or irregularity means it's time to call a professional. Don't wait for a complete failure.

2. Listen for Warning Sounds

Your ears can catch problems your eyes might miss. Pay attention to how your door sounds during normal operation.

 • Squeaking or grinding noises usually mean the springs need lubrication
 • A loud bang from the garage (even if you didn't see what happened) almost certainly means a spring has broken. Stop using the door immediately and call us
 • Jerky, uneven movement during opening or closing can indicate a spring imbalance or a spring that's losing tension

3. Lubricate Springs (Every 6 Months)

Proper lubrication reduces friction, prevents rust, and helps springs operate smoothly. This is one of the simplest and most effective maintenance tasks you can do.

Lubrication Guide

Use white lithium grease or silicone-based garage door lubricant. Spray along the full length of each spring coil. Also lubricate hinges, metal rollers (skip nylon), and bearing plates. Never use WD-40 — it's a solvent that strips protective coating from springs.

The best times to lubricate are early spring (after winter stress) and early fall (before cold weather stiffens everything up). For a complete seasonal guide, see our seasonal maintenance checklist.

4. The Balance Test (Every 6 Months)

The balance test tells you whether your springs are holding proper tension. An unbalanced door puts extra strain on your opener and wears out components faster.

Here's how to do it safely:

The Balance Test

1
Disconnect the opener by pulling the red emergency release cord
2
Manually lift the door to about the halfway point
3
Let go of the door
4
The door should stay in place on its own, roughly where you left it

If the door falls back down, the springs are too weak and need professional adjustment. If the door rises up on its own, the springs have too much tension and also need adjustment. Either result means it's time to call a professional. Do not attempt to adjust spring tension yourself.

When you're done, reconnect the opener by pulling the release cord toward the opener unit and cycling the door with the remote.

5. Keep the Area Clean

Dust, cobwebs, and debris can accumulate on springs and hardware over time. This buildup traps moisture against the metal, accelerating rust and corrosion. This is especially relevant in the St. Louis metro, where humidity is a constant factor from May through September.

Wipe down springs and hardware periodically. Make sure nothing is touching, leaning against, or rubbing on the springs. Good airflow around the spring assembly helps reduce moisture buildup and keeps everything in better condition.

What You Should NEVER Do

Some garage door maintenance is safe for homeowners. Spring adjustment and replacement is not. Here's where to draw the line.

Never try to adjust spring tension yourself. Torsion springs require specialized winding bars and precise calibration. One slip can release hundreds of pounds of stored energy instantly.

Never use a substitute for winding bars. Screwdrivers, pry bars, and other improvised tools are not designed for this purpose. They can slip out of the winding cone without warning.

Never try to replace springs without professional training and tools. Even if you've watched online videos, this is not a job where "close enough" is good enough. The margin for error is extremely small and the consequences of a mistake are severe.

Never operate a door with a visibly broken spring. Without spring tension, the full weight of the door (150 to 400+ pounds) is unsupported. Forcing it open or closed can damage the opener, bend tracks, or cause the door to fall.

Annual Safety Reminder

Every year, homeowners are seriously hurt attempting DIY spring repairs. Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury or death. This is the one garage door job that's truly not safe to do yourself. Call a professional.

Signs Your Springs Need Professional Attention

If you notice any of the following, it's time to call us for an inspection. Most of these indicate springs that are worn, weakening, or already failing.

Signs Your Springs Need Attention

 • Door feels heavier than usual — springs losing tension, opener working harder
 • Door won't stay open on its own — fails the balance test
 • Visible rust, corrosion, or wear — heavy corrosion weakens metal
 • Squeaking persists despite lubrication — possible internal wear or micro-fractures
 • Door opens unevenly — one spring has lost more tension than the other
 • Springs are 7+ years old, never serviced — overdue for inspection
 • Loud bang from the garage — a spring has already broken, do not use the door

How Often Should Springs Be Maintained?

The short answer: at least once a year by a professional, with your own basic checks more frequently.

Level Frequency What's Included
Minimum Annual professional tune-up Complete spring inspection, lubrication, tension check, balance test — all part of the 26-point inspection
Better Twice a year DIY + annual pro Your own spring and fall checks plus the annual professional tune-up to catch seasonal wear
Best Monthly visual + biannual lube + annual pro Monthly visual inspections, biannual lubrication and balance tests, plus a professional tune-up for the most thorough coverage

The FOREVER Ready Club™ makes the professional side of this easy. Members receive an annual tune-up and 26-point inspection that covers springs, cables, rollers, tracks, and every other component. You also get 10% off parts, doors, and future services. It's the "set it and forget it" approach to garage door care, and spring inspection is a core part of every visit.

The FOREVER Spring™ Advantage

Standard springs wear out. That's not a flaw in the design — it's simply the nature of a component that cycles under heavy load thousands of times per year. For most families, standard springs last 3 to 5 years before they need replacement. That means if you own your home for 30 years, you're likely replacing springs 6 to 10 times.

The FOREVER Spring™ Advantage

Standard springs wear out every 3-5 years. The FOREVER Spring™ eliminates that cycle entirely with a lifetime warranty — designed to be the last spring you ever need. No more wondering when your springs will give out. No more emergency repair calls. No more surprise costs. Ask about it during any service call, tune-up, or spring replacement.

If your current springs are nearing end of life, upgrading to the FOREVER Spring™ during replacement is the smartest long-term investment you can make. Call (314) 400-8133 to learn more.

FAQ: Spring Maintenance

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard springs are rated for approximately 10,000 cycles, which translates to about 3 to 5 years for most families. High-cycle springs last 7 to 10 years with ratings of 25,000+ cycles. The FOREVER Spring™ carries a lifetime warranty, meaning you never need to buy another spring. Your spring lifespan depends on usage frequency, climate conditions, and maintenance.

Yes, and you should. Use white lithium grease or a silicone-based garage door lubricant every 6 months. Spray along the full length of each spring coil. Never use WD-40. It's a solvent, not a lubricant, and it will strip protective coating from your springs rather than protect them.

You'll hear a loud bang, similar to a gunshot or a car backfiring. The door will become extremely heavy (150 to 400+ pounds without spring support) and your opener won't be able to lift it properly. Do not try to open or close the door. Do not try to disconnect and manually lift it. Call us for same-day spring replacement. This is one of the most common emergency calls we handle across St. Louis, St. Charles, and Jefferson County.

Yes, always. Springs are installed in matched pairs. If one has broken, the other has been under the same stress for the same number of cycles and is very close to failure. Replacing just the broken spring almost always results in a second service call within weeks or months when the remaining spring gives out.

The cost depends on the spring type, size, and whether you choose standard, high-cycle, or FOREVER Spring™ options. We provide a free diagnosis for residents in qualifying ZIP codes near Chesterfield,* and we give you a clear price before any work begins. No surprises. Call (314) 400-8133 for an evaluation.
*Qualifying ZIP codes: 63005, 63017, 63011, 63021, 63038, 63040, 63088, 63131, 63141, 63122, 63124. $89 diagnostic fee within 15 miles (credited 100% toward repair same day). $129 for 15–30 miles (credited 100% toward repair same day).

If you plan to stay in your home long-term, the FOREVER Spring™ is one of the best investments you can make in your garage door system. You'll never pay for spring replacement again. Standard springs cost money to replace every 3 to 5 years, plus the inconvenience of an unexpected failure. The FOREVER Spring™ eliminates both the recurring cost and the risk.
