Choosing the Right Opener
Types of Garage Door Openers
Each drive type has its own strengths. Here's how they compare.
Chain Drive
Most AffordableUses a metal chain to move the door. Reliable and durable, but the noisiest option.
Best for: Detached garages where noise isn't a concern
Belt Drive
RecommendedUses a rubber belt instead of chain. Much quieter operation—ideal for attached garages.
Best for: Living space above or beside garage
Screw Drive
Low MaintenanceThreaded steel rod with fewer moving parts. Moderate noise. Temperature-sensitive.
Note: Less ideal for St. Louis temperature swings
Wall-Mount (Jackshaft)
Premium OptionMounts beside the door and eliminates the overhead rail entirely. Includes an automatic deadbolt lock for higher security. Ideal for homes with car lifts or finished overhead space. Camera not available on wall-mount models.
Best for: Car lifts, high-end garages, maximum ceiling clearance
Direct Drive
PremiumMotor moves along stationary chain. Only one moving part—extremely quiet and reliable.
Best for: Maximum quiet & longevity (premium option)

Get Free Local Diagnosis*Garage Door Opener FAQ
Most openers last 10-15 years with proper maintenance. Heavy use, power surges, and lack of maintenance can shorten lifespan. If your opener is over 15 years old and having issues, replacement often makes more sense than repair.
If the repair cost is more than half the price of a new opener, replacement usually makes more sense. Also consider: Is your opener over 15 years old? Does it lack safety features like auto-reverse? Is it noisy or unreliable? These are signs it may be time to upgrade.
It's possible, but we don't recommend it for most homeowners. Improper installation can create safety hazards, void warranties, and cause premature failure. Professional installation ensures everything is set up correctly.
Opener power is measured in horsepower (HP) or lifting force. For standard single-car doors, 1/2 HP is usually sufficient. Heavier or oversized doors may need 3/4 HP or more. We'll recommend the right size based on your door.
Usually not. New openers come with new remotes. However, we can often program additional remotes or keypads to work with your new system.
They're made by the same company. LiftMaster is the professional-grade brand sold through dealers and installers. Chamberlain is the consumer brand sold at retail stores. Similar technology, but LiftMaster models are generally more robust.
MyQ lets you control your garage door from your smartphone. Get alerts when the door opens or closes, check status from anywhere, and even let deliveries or guests in remotely. Available on most LiftMaster models.
